Does anyone with experience of panic attacks have a feeling for whether they arise out of a gradual, largely unnoticed building of anxiety and/or whether the panic attack's resultant effect is to temporarily "reset" the mind to a calmer setting?

In other words, could a panic attack be viewed as a cathartic release of pent-up anxiety?
