If you’re #ActuallyAutistic :autism: and wanna share:

- Are you employed?
- If yes, where? What do you do?
- If no, what are the biggest challenges?
- Which accommodations do you need or get? Which are denied?

For me:
I am employed. I’m working in tech / computer science / telecommunication.
My boss is very chill and we have remote work / home office most of the time, so I can accommodate myself.
But if I go to my workplace the
accommodations I have or get are:

- My job is one of my special interests. We work on problems on ourselves. There’s a lot of information on the internet and intranet. You can work relatively in your own pace.
- No direct contact to clients: I can wear comfy clothes.
- I can wear headphones, even listen to music
- in my team it’s generally okay to not talk or socialise. If we do, we almost always exchange (special) interests. Little to no small talk.
- I can get up, move around, go outside, eat and drink, go to the bathroom whenever I want.
- At least the lights at your own desk can be controlled individually.
- Food choices are pretty okay. There’s a kiosk and snack bar around. We have a cantine and also a microwave + kettle to use.

The biggest challenges for me in the workplace are my social anxiety and the requirement for interviews when I have selective mutism. Also, almost every criteria says "good communication skills" or whatever and being autistic, I don't think I stand a chance lol. So I haven't got a job. I want to work but I know I would struggle unless they really knew every part of me and made adjustments for my selective mutism, which they probably wouldn't, because they require good communication.

I also have cripplingly low self-esteem and mental health issues from my childhood that never really got fixed so I would be that person that can only work every other day and needs to leave after lunch so I can nap. I just don't think any job would want me when there are so many other candidates without my difficulties. Just wish I had more confidence and less anxiety!
