@ideasgonewild well to me- a special interest is something that persists through life. For me- that has been running, my friend’s son - it’s elevators. A hyperfixation is for me again a generally temporary period of intense concentration where I rapidly and obsessively absorb everything about a topic… and then eventually- stop. But that’s just how I see them.

Yeah, this is pretty much my understanding also. Although I don't think have to be lifelong, they're just measured in years vs days/weeks. I have a few special interests that have been mostly lifelong but I treat the ones that cycle in and out every 5-10 years as special interests too.

The ones I struggle to categorize are the ones which go for years, like special interests, but I don't always engage with all that much, except when I remember they exist and go on a massive hyperfixation. 😂
